It’s really funny for when a friend of mine has been playing through GOW Ragnarok, FF16 and FF7 Rebirth in that order on stream and she can’t escape Nordic mythology references and especially Odin.

I think having him look dusty from dirt and gravel wouldve helped his design.

At first i am a bit iffy that he has horns on his helmet, the stereotype of horned viking helmets which is just wrong, but thrn i thought....maybe its a reference to the Wild Hunt which he is said to be the leader of in some tale?

Interestingly Odin _does_ use a spear in several incarnations, but only when the enemy is immune to Instant death such against bosses. In those situations he just deals a massive amount of damage.

While I’m not surprised, I am still disappointed at how there’s not even a mention of Odin’s unique situation in 14. His depiction in 14 is, while heavily armored, surprisingly faithful. Specifically it embodies 2 aspects of his mythology, Odin, as the lead rider for “The Wild Hunt”, a procession of dead souls that follow Odin on his rides through the countryside to collect the souls of the dead. And his supreme mastery of everything martial, as the eventual general of every warrior that has existed, does exist, and will exist. But Odin in this game is also, a title, of sorts? The actual summon is the sword and skills, the knight and horse are born from the widely held belief that Whoever fells Odin’s physical body, will eventually become a host for him and his skills. In game this is manifested as the overworld Boss version of him taking the name and appearance of the player that got the last hit on him in his previous defeat. And if no one shows up to challenge him, he just goes “fair enough, there aren’t any warriors here to collect”, and fucks off

I would love to see a more mythology-based Odin in FF.

I love her Ken Sugimori design where she has dark purple hair, and her Pokémon Stadium look where it's sort of a burgundy-brown

Something that happens with OG FF's names are that they use then without the figure behind in mind. The more clear example is Gilgamesh, that doesn't have sny resemblance to the epic and instead is Benkei with other name.

You might almost say that the 16 design's suit like qualities can extend to something like a mech suit.

At least in FFXIV Odin is not like... the real spirit The Zantetsuken(his sword) is the real one, if you defeat Odin and "claim the Zantetsuken" you become the next Odin It has a fate that you can participate to defeat him and the one who do the last hit "becomes" Odin, so the next time he spawns appears with the model of the player who defeat him on the Odin armor

Bruno is the street fighter ryu reference/homage pokemon needed and thats all you need for him to be goated

Some things can just be just what it is. No twist needed, which in these times is probably a bigger twist than anything.

Odin always striked me as a weird summon exactly because he shares almost no relation to its mythological counterpart. I always said that Ramuh was a better Odin like design imo than Odin itself. Also the fact that he looks like a European knight, named after a scandinavian god, with an attack named in classic japanese.

Bruno’s design twist is that he’s literally the worst elite four member of all time. Like his team is straight garbage.

Prestiges : take a good skin concept with storytelling through character design > put it in gold > make it bland and generic .. and voila !

About the roundabouts, in the Netherlands, it’s that those on the roundabout have right of way. This includes cyclists and pedestrians. I do like Bruno's bands around his wrist and ankles, I don't know if it was intended but to me it feels like a direct reference to Primeape.

I think he is growing as a character. Sora in DDD and III was still naïve, even with darker themes. Let's wait and see.

I'd like to see a future design of Odin that has the recognizable silhouette of his previous incarnations, but incorporates more inspiration from his real world counterpart. Maybe he is still armored, but he wears a cloak that covers most of his body, giving him a more sorcerer type look. His face is covered by a helmet, but a single glowing eye is visible behind the visor. And his primary weapon is his spear Gungnir, with a twist that when he uses his signature move - Zantetsuken - the spears dissolves, revealing the sword underneath. Well, that is just one idea. The point is that I'd want to see a fusion design between the two. One that has more recognizable features of his mythological inspiration, but one that does not sacrifice his established identity in the franchise.

I feel like God Of War Ragnarok was really good pr for Odin, and really throws the generic final fantasy designs into sharp relief.

His song, "The Riddle", in FFXVI properly references his mythology though which is funny. "The twain on ten feet run (8 Sleipnir legs + 2 Odin), three eyes and one (2 Sleipnir eyes + 1 Odin) trained upon victory!" A funny discussion too is why he chooses the Japanese-named blade "Zantetsuken" as his weapon.
